More SRS Home Tests

milan testing The SRS project has carried out its second set of user tests within the Smart Home laboratory of the Don Carlo Gnocchi Foundation which accurately represents the real-world home environment. This gave the project the opportunity to test the system with elderly people who are more frail and hence in need of the SRS system. Thereby enabling the project to examine the performance of the system with a wide spectrum of elderly users.

As well as allowing the project to get important feedback from potential elderly SRS end-users the test was also another opportunity to identify any technical problems that happen when the Care-o-Bot robot operates within a real home environment.

In order to facilitate the evaluation process two interviewers attended the testing to help gather feedback from the participants as they performed the tests. During this testing activity three usage objectives were examined:
Objective 1: Elderly improving their Autonomy at home. Elderly people sitting on the sofa using UI-LOC autonomously send the robot to bring a medicine box located on a shelf in the corridor.

Objective 2: Family member monitoring situation. Family member calls the elderly person to check the situation at home. He/she realizes that the assisted forgot to take the medicine. The elderly accepts the help of the family member. The family member using UI_PRI sends the robot to bring a medicine box located on a shelf in the corridor, in the mean time the elderly and the family member keep talking, and the family member has also visual feedback of what the robot is doing and were it is going.

Objective 3: Managing emergency. An elderly person feeling bad presses the emergency button. The professional operator is immediately contacted. The elderly states that immediately needs it’s medicine. The professional operator using UI_PRO sends the robot to bring a medicine box located on a shelf in the corridor, in the mean time the elderly and the professional remote operator keep talking, and the professional operator has also feedback through the robot simulator of the robot movements and robotic arm.
